We hiked to Desolation Lake the same day as Dog Lake. They are both spurs off the same trail in our guide, 60 Hikes Within 60 Miles: Salt Lake City. This was a much more beautful and serene lake than Dog Lake, with crystal clear water . . . perfect for a swim (except swimming isn't allowed). As we traversed around the lake, every time we passed a bush or tree the mosquitos would venture out and try to get us, but we just kept moving and stayed in the sun as much as possible. There is a possible campsite not far from the lake, but I wonder if at dusk the mosquitos go haywire with their free range. Anyway, wonderful lake . . . great destination.
This marshy meadow comes quite a ways before the lake.
Happy trails!
